Gauteng

Situated in the heart of the Highveld, Gauteng is the smallest province of South Africa, but at the same time one of the most densely populated. It is home to a number of major cities, including Johannesburg.

Bordered by Free State and Vaal River to the South, the NW province to the North, as well as Mpumalanga and Limpopo, Gauteng sits at the centre of some of South Africa's most unique sites of interest. The region is home to the busy cities of Soweto, Pretoria and, of course, Johannesburg, Gauteng’s capital and the largest city in South Africa. All offer good hotels and numerous city attractions, including museums and historic monuments, bars and restaurants. Mostly, however, these cities serve as convenient bases from which to explore the surrounding region.

The Gauteng area is typically only used as a stop-over point for tourists, but you may wish to stay more than one night here and learn about its major cities and their people.

Johannesburg, Soweto and Pretoria offer the usual city attractions. Away from the cities, the Pilansberg Game Reserve is home to the Big Five. You'll also find a number of nature reserves – Groenkloof, Rietvlei, Wonderbloom – as well as the Lion Park and Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. None of these are of major interest, but they can make interesting day trips if for whatever reason you find yourself in Gauteng for more than one day.
