ARCTIC ADVENTURE IN SVALBARD

Gane and Marshall offers you the finest collection of adventure cruises and Arctic expeditions out of Longyearbyen, the principal town of Svalbard. Our snowmobile excursions and dog treks will get you close to the unique Polar wildlife during the Arctic winter and spring, while expeditions such as Trans-Spitsbergen by ski or dog sled will enable you to experience Arctic conditions such as those encountered by the early Polar explorers. For a more leisurely break, an Arctic cruise will show you the dramatic coastline and wildlife of Spitsbergen. (For cruises around Svalbard and Norway, please see our Arctic cruise pages).

From Longyearbyen, we offer a number of day trips and short Arctic expeditions, including boat trips to Pyramiden and Barentsburg in the stunningly beautiful Isfjorden ('the Ice Fjord'), as well as mountain treks, dog sledding, snow-mobiling, kayaking and much more. Our Into the Arctic expeditions allow you to spend two days on the Polar ice, during which you'll be required to sledge haul your equipment, set up camp, and prepare meals - it works perfectly as a precursor to a North Pole expedition, or just as a standalone adventure.

Svalbard should be of keen interest to any wildlife enthusiast. Visitors can hope to see reindeer outside their hotel rooms, and may even see the rare polar fox while wandering around the town of Longyearbyen. The landscapes, too, are stunning. Sixty percent of Svalbard is covered by glaciers, and you can see icebergs in many different shapes both from the land and on the boat excursions in Isfjorden—and of course on the spectacular cruises taking you to more remote corners of the archipelago, where the chances of seeing polar bears are also good.

Longyearbyen is the largest settlement on Svalbard. Situated on the western coast of Spitsbergen, it's an ideal base from which to spend a few days exploring the surrounding Polar expanse. Many travellers only spend a night or two in Longyearbyen before heading out onto the ice, but with lots of top hotels, including the Radisson Blu and the Spitsbergen Guesthouse, you could quite happily spend longer. From your table at Brasserie Nansen in the Radisson Blu you can enjoy an uninterrupted view of the majestic Arctic mountains and glaciers, accompanied by a unique Arctic menu and a fine selection of wines and beers (properly chilled, of course!)
