Xudum Lodge

Situated in a private concession in the south-west of the Okavango Delta, Xudum is an up-market safari lodge built on two levels with wonderful views of the floodplains of the Okavango.

Xudum Lodge is situated in the south-west of the Okavango Delta, in the same private concession as its sister camp Xaranna. Part of the &Beyond portfolio, it’s an up-market safari lodge boasting an intimate setting and the kind of amenities and comforts that one would normally expect of a good hotel—for many, these comforts will be most welcome, for others, whose primary interest is undistracted wildlife viewing, perhaps somewhat unnecessary in a safari setting.

Xudum is a beautiful lodge, with a wonderfully intimate setting on its own private island close to Moremi, its nine suites sprawled out along the banks of the lagoon. Like Xaranna, which is in the same concession, Xudum isn’t a camp particularly well suited to big game viewing. It’s located right in the heart of the Okavango’s seasonal floodplains, and so the emphasis is very much on water-based activities – peaceful mokoro trips on the waterways of the Okavango are the order of the day at Xudum, as are walking safaris (within the vicinity of the camp, extended walks or mobile walking safaris are not an option), while game drives are limited.

Xudum is built on two levels, yet it manages to blend in beautifully with its surroundings. Pitched discretely within the tree line, its chunky, rough-hewn timber buildings and recycled features give the lodge a natural, earthy feel, while its raised sala lounge allows for 180 degree views of the waterways below. Xudum's public spaces, in contrast to the surrounding expanse of the Okavango, are intimate and cosy.

Accommodation

Nine multi-level safari suites, constructed from timber and recycled metal, lay spread out across the lagoon. The suites are large and spacious, with full-size bathtubs, indoor and outdoor showers, private plunge pools, comfortable living areas and king-sized beds. Our favourite feature is the rooftop hideout, which offers wonderful views of the lagoon by day and the star-filled African sky by night.

Dining

The food and presentation at Xudum is excellent. Hot and cold breakfasts, and set lunches and dinners are served on the upper level decks overlooking the lagoon or in the privacy of your suite. Vegetarians are well-catered for.

The lodge has an open kitchen, where you can watch your food being prepared.
