The Tides

The Tides Lodge in Pangani occupies a beautiful, largely unspoiled stretch of beach on Tanzania's northern Swahili coastline. It's a delightful, reasonably priced alternative to the busier resorts on Zanzibar.

The Tides Lodge is a remote, low-key beach resort situated on Ushongo Beach, some 10km south of Pangani on Tanzania's unspoilt northern coastline. Ushongo has been rated one of the Top Secret Beaches of the World by the Sunday Times travel magazine, and the Tides was the first and, to this day, the best lodge to open in the area.

The Tides aims to provide a relaxing, rustic retreat with little pretence. The service here is generous but unobtrusive, and the atmosphere at the lodge decidedly low-key. This, combined with the gorgeous location and the reasonable rates, makes the Tides one of our very favourite beach hideaways in Tanzania.

The Tides Lodge is perfect for those looking for a relaxing end to a safari, or for those simply wanting to relax and unwind from the get-go. It offers a genuinely remote location and is much better value than comparable lodges on Zanzibar.

The Tides was expanded at the beginning of the 2016 with the addition of a new luxury villa, Mawimbi. Separate to the main lodge, Mawimbi enjoys its own private beach access, and can be booked on an exclusive basis by families and small groups.

Accommodation

The Tides offers just seven makuti-thatch chalets and two suites. The rooms are decorated in a fresh and simple manner, and cooled by the ocean breeze. The standard rooms are reasonably spacious, and feature twin/double bedrooms with Swahili carved furnishings, large en-suite bathrooms, and private verandahs. Of the two suites, one is a family unit with additional bedroom and separate living area, and the other a honeymoon suite split across two levels with upstairs bedroom and balcony, and lower floor lounge, bathroom and verandah.

The Tides was expanded at the beginning of 2016 with the addition of a new luxury villa, Mawimbi. Separate to the main lodge, Mawimbi sleeps up to 12 guests in six bedrooms (all with ocean views) and enjoys its own private pool and beach access. The villa has a dedicated staff and chef, and can be booked on an exclusive basis by families and small groups.
