Tarangire River Camp

Tarangire River Camp is a classic tented bush camp situated on a 60,000 acre private concession just outside Tarangire National Park. It enjoys easy access to the park and impressive views of the Tarangire River.

Tarangire River Camp is a comfortable bush camp situated in a private 60,000 acre concession just outside Tarangire National Park, Northern Tanzania. It is one of the best low-cost options in the region, offering easy access to the park and marvellous views.

While its location outside of Tarangire National Park might at first sight seem a disadvantage, the location of River Camp has in fact been carefully chosen. The camp is perched on a low cliff overlooking the Tarangire River and Park, its public areas and tents spread out along the edge of the ridge in order to make the most of the wonderful views.

The downside to being located outside of the National Park is that each day begins with a mostly uninteresting half hour drive to the main park gates. As Tarangire River Camp is in a private concession, it is possible to do game-viewing activities outside of the national park, including activities such as walking safaris and night drives that are not otherwise allowed. But the game is fairly limited in the region immediately surrounding River Camp, meaning that most activities take place within the park.

As for the camp itself, Tarangire River Camp follows a fairly standard set-up, consisting of an open-air lounge, bar and restaurant under thatch and twenty classic East African safari tents spaced along the edge of the ridge. The tents are raised on stilts to allow for an improved view, and are comfortably, if simply, furnished.

Accommodation

Tarangire River Camp consists of 20 spacious tents, raised on high wooden platforms and covered in grass thatch. The tents are tastefully furnished with large double beds and simple lounge furniture. The en-suite bathrooms feature shower, washbasin and flush loo. Hot water is supplied in the evenings—cold running water throughout the day.

At the front of each tent is a verandah with a view of the National Park and, on a clear day, Mts Meru and Kilimanjaro in the distance. Several of the tents have a direct view of the Tarangire River.

Dining

The meals are hearty and plentiful, and served in the open-air dining area with a view.
