Spier Estate

The Spier Hotel, built in 2000, is a large resort hotel that forms part of the extensive Spier estate, one of the oldest wine estates in the Stellenbosch region.

An extension to the 300 year old Spier estate, the Spier Hotel is located only one hour from Cape Town in the wine-growing valleys of Stellenbosch.

You will sometimes read that the Spier Hotel dates back to the 18th-century. This is somewhat misleading. The Spier estate and farm does indeed date back to 1783, and the estate grounds still contain many old Cape Dutch buildings, including a winery built in 1750. But the hotel itself is of much more recent origins, having been constructed in 2000 and renovated in 2008.

It shows. The Spier Hotel a large resort hotel laid out in the form of a village, complete with Mediterranean-themed squares. There are 155 rooms, contained within neat and pretty Cape Malay style buildings, painted in pastel colours and grouped around six courtyards.

The appeal of Spier Hotel is its convenience, its family-friendly facilities, and its great location on the banks of Eerste River, just outside Stellenbosch. Those looking for an authentic South African country home will be better served by one of the many guesthouses in the region, but the Spier Hotel should cater to those looking for convenience and a relaxed environment—the location is ideal, the grounds well-maintained and the facilities excellent.

Accommodation

There are a number of different room categories at Spier Hotel & Estate. The standard rooms and suites are attractively if simply appointed, while the five ‘art rooms’ offer something a little more unique. Each has been personally designed by a South African artist according to a set theme. All rooms are en-suite and open onto a shaded patio.

Dining

The Spier estate is home to a number of restaurants, such as Moyo’s, which serves an outdoor buffet accompanied by live performances, and Jonkershuis, a lunch and dinner restaurant situated near the Eerste River. There is also a bar and terrace serving light meals and drinks.
