Sofitel Luang Prabang

The Sofitel Luang Prabang (formerly, the Hotel de la Paix) is a 5-star resort situated on the outskirts of Luang Prabang, on the site of the town’s old colonial-era prison. It features 25 suites overlooking a fabulous courtyard and swimming pool.

Set against a mountain backdrop on the outskirts of Luang Prabang, Sofitel Luang Prabang is a modern five-star resort with gorgeous rooms and a wealth of amenities. Formerly the Hotel de la Paix, it is the sister property to 3 Nagas, a stylish boutique hotel situated in Luang Prabang’s Old Quarter, though it features a much more modern aesthetic and better facilities than its sister resort.

Though it has only 25 guestrooms, Sofitel Luang Prabang is a substantial resort, built around a huge central courtyard containing a dining terrace, pool and well-maintained gardens. It’s all beautifully-presented, so much so that it’s hard to believe that this was once the site of the town’s only prison, before it was bought and converted into a resort.

Sofitel Luang Prabang’s location on the outskirts of town ensures a good level of peace and quiet, though it does require a 15-20 minute walk to the town centre. Complimentary bicycles are offered and there is a shuttle service that runs until 9:30PM, partly mitigating the issue. The main advantage of being on the outskirts of town, however, is the extra space and facilities, including a large pool, which wouldn’t be allowed within a several mile radius of Luang Prabang's Old Quarter. Many who stay at Sofitel Luang Prabang book it in conjunction with 3 Nagas, enjoying a night in the town centre followed by a couple of day’s relaxation outside of town, which we find works very well.

Accommodation

Sofitel Luang Prabang offers 25 suites, divided into four categories: Garden, Heritage, Pool and Governor. All of the rooms, including the lower category suites, are situated around the courtyard and open onto their own private gardens with daybed (and a plunge pool in the case of the higher category rooms). Inside they are beautifully appointed with large four-poster beds, rosewood furnishings and vibrant fabrics.

The Garden and Heritage Suites are identical except for the fact that the latter are housed in the original, UNESCO registered buildings, whereas the Garden rooms are in newer units. The four Pool suites are located at the corners of the courtyard, and feature larger L-shaped gardens with pool and loungers.

The two Governor suites are huge, and feature separate living and sleeping areas, indoor and outdoor bathrooms, and a large garden (though it lacks a pool).

Amenities in all rooms include air-con, room safe, minibar, media centre (LCD TV, iPod dock, DVD Player), and Wi-Fi connection.

Dining

Sofitel Luang Prabang offers two restaurants, the Sa Bai, which serves a varied menu of European and Asian dishes, and Kaipen, which offers seasonal Lao cuisine.

Sofitel Luang Prabang also offers in-room dining, so you can enjoy candle-lit dinners in your own private garden.
