Shumba Camp

Kafue National Park, Zambia

Shumba Camp

Part of the Wilderness Safaris portfolio, Shumba Camp is an exclusive luxury bush camp situated on the Busanga Plains, in the remote north of Kafue National Park.

At 22,500 sq km, Kafue National Park is one of the largest safari parks in Africa. The Busanga Plains lie in the extreme north of Kafue, and are home to Shumba Camp and an almost unmatched diversity of wildlife.

Shumba is one of the oldest camps in Kafue, though it’s been through many changes over the years. Originally established as a rather basic bush camp, it was bought by luxury safari operator Wilderness Safaris in 2005, who replaced the original bush camp with a high end safari lodge. It still enjoys the same marvellous location, but the accommodation has changed beyond recognition. The new camp is built on vast wooden decks and constructed of stone, thatch and glass, its public areas stylishly furnished in the clean, modern style that has become a Wilderness Safaris' hallmark. This is classed as one of their highest-category camps, and it shows.

Shumba Camp hasn’t changed in every respect, however. It is still small, with just six guest tents, and the location remains as breath-taking as ever, indeed perhaps more so with the new Wilderness lodge carefully designed to make the most of the views. The Busanga Plains stretch in front of the camp as far as the eye can see. Exploring this most remote and scenic region of Kafue National Park is a joy, with options for day and night drives, guided safari walks, and, when the water levels are high enough (generally May-June), boat safaris.

Shumba Camp is open between May and December.

Accommodation

Shumba Camp offers just six tents, all positioned on raised wooden platforms that look out over the plains. The tents are standard Meru-style safari tents - very spacious and beautifully furnished. They are en-suite with indoor and outdoor showers.

Dining

Meals are usually served in the dining area under a canopy of giant fig trees, or else in the boma with a view of the stars and the Busanga Floodplains. There’s a generously-stocked bar with a good selection of South African wines.
