Samburu Intrepids

Samburu Intrepids is a well-presented mid-range safari camp situated in the Samburu National Reserve, in the central Kenyan highlands. It offers comfortable accommodation for a large number of guests.

Samburu Intrepids is a comfortable tented camp situated in the little-visited Samburu National Reserve, in the central Kenyan highlands. It occupies a fine location on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River, which cuts through the heart of the reserve.

Samburu Intrepids has a unique design that separates it from other East African safari camps. Its tented rooms and public areas all raised high off the ground on stilts, in order to make the most of the impressive views. The open-air lounge and restaurant area is an inviting spot to relax, with a long terrace where meals are served, and a palm-thatch interior that offers respite from the sun during the heat of the day. There's a very relaxed feel to Samburu Intrepids, though some will find it perhaps a bit too large, with 28 tents.

Samburu Intrepids is located at the heart of the Samburu Reserve, and offers a good game-viewing experience. Though Samburu doesn't offer the spectacular concentrations of game to be found in the Mara, it is an impressive reserve with a rich diversity of game, including what is sometimes referred to as the 'unique 5' – the rare long-neck gerenuk, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx, Grevy's zebra, and the reticulated giraffe. The guides at Samburu are knowledgeable and the game activities – walks and drives – conducted well.

Accommodation

Samburu Intrepids offers 28 classic Meru-style safari tents, raised a few metres from the ground on wooden platforms and stilts. The tents are spacious and attractively furnished, with mahogany writing desks, large double beds, and polished wooden floors. The en-suite bathrooms have twin washbasins, flush toilets and showers with constant hot running water. The verandahs at the front of each unit are furnished with comfy lounge furniture and offer wonderful views.

The size of Samburu Intrepids makes the lodge a less attractive prospect than it might otherwise be. The rooms are, at least, located a fair distance from each other and positioned among the trees and bush, so as to ensure a reasonable level of privacy.

Dining

Samburu Intrepids forgoes the traditional camp buffet and offers instead a range of menus. Meals are served at individual tables, rather than the communal dining experience offered at most smaller safari camps.
