Sala’s Camp

Masai Mara Game Reserve

Sala’s Camp

Sala’s is a fabulous small tented camp pitched between the Keekerok River and the seasonal Sand River in the Masai Mara Game Reserve. This is one of the quieter regions of the Mara, close to the Tanzania border.

Guests here can expect less vehicle traffic and exceptional game-viewing, while still being within reach of the famous Mara Triangle region. If this was not enough, it’s also a prime position from which to witness the wildebeest river crossings between July and October.

Sala’s Camp sits on at the top of the riverbank, with views to the water below and the plains that extend into the distance. The main public areas – comprising dining room, lounge and bar – are built on low wooden decking, and open onto a neatly-trimmed lawn area (where croquet is available!), which extends to a sunken wooden deck with fire pit on the edge of the river bank. The guest areas are a blend of the contemporary and traditional, with polished wooden flooring, corrugated iron roofs topped with canvas, and glass fronted doors. In design, Sala’s is very much a permanent lodge, but with many of the trappings of a traditional bush camp.

Accommodation

Sala’s Camp offers just seven tented rooms, all of them positioned on the riverbank where tall sausage trees provide shade and ensure the rooms stay comfortably cool. The tents differ in layout, though not in style. There is a family unit with additional lounge/second bedroom, and a more spacious honeymooners’ tent. All are furnished with vibrant African throws and cushions and crisp white bed linens.

Each tent has a washbasin with running water, and separate bathroom with flush toilet, shower with running water, and a selection of toiletries. At the front of each tent is a seating area with table and comfy deck chairs, hammock and a private plunge pool, accessed via floor-to-ceiling glass doors.

Dining

Meals at Sala’s Camp are prepared to a high standard and can be taken in the main dining area in the company of other guests, privately on your room deck, or by candlelight on the banks of the Sand River, close to the camp. Bush breakfasts are also offered. The fire pit is a lovely spot for an aperitif and a chat with fellow guests before or after dinner.
