Pumulani Beach Lodge

Pumulani Beach Lodge is a rustic beach getaway nestled in the forested hills and craggy outcrops at the southern end of Lake Malawi, from where it enjoys magnificent views of the lake and surrounds.

Pumulani Beach Lodge nestles in the forested hills and craggy outcrops at the southern end of Lake Malawi. A rustic beach getaway, it offers accommodation for just a limited number of guests in its ten villas, all of which are positioned with a view of the lake.

Managed by Robin Pope Safaris, who also run several top safari lodges in neighbouring Zambia, Pumulani exhibits the down-to-earth style that is their trademark. Stylish but unfussy, Pumulani has the mood and atmosphere of a low-key beach bungalow retreat but its villas are furnished to luxury standards, and its amenities, including a marvellous infinity swimming pool, are better than those offered by most other Lake Malawi lodges.

It is its setting, however, that really sets Pumulani apart. From its position on a high hill, the lodge enjoys fabulous views of the lake and surrounds. Wooden steps and walkways connect the villas to the central guest areas, where you’ll find a large infinity pool and open-air bar and restaurant with fireplace, and then further down to a long stretch of beach on the lakeshore, complete with sun chairs, hammock, beach bar and a floating platform on the lake. It's a lovely spot to relax and soak up the sun!

Pumulani Lodge is primarily a beach retreat, perfect for relaxing after a hot and dusty safari in Zambia or Botswana. However, more active travellers will find plenty of options to keep themselves busy. Snorkelling, water-skiing, kayaking, fishing, diving and can all be arranged through the lodge, as can sunset river cruises in Pumulani’s own wooden dhow. Inland, Pumulani provides mountain bikes for those who want to explore the lakeshore area, which can also be explored on guided walks.

Accommodation

Pumulani’s ten villas are scattered across the hillside at different levels, with grass thatch roofs so as to blend into their surrounds. They are hugely spacious and offer lots of style without being overly ostentatious. Large bedrooms open out onto private decks overlooking the lake. The bathrooms, too, feature marvellous views, and are equipped with double shower and standalone bathtub. Each villa also features a separate lounge area.

Of Pumulani’s ten villas, one is a family villa with two bedrooms (providing space for up to four guests), and one a honeymoon suite, which enjoys a more private location and outdoor shower.

Dining

Breakfast is a light buffet of cereals, pastries and fruits, with cooked dishes to order. Lunch and dinner are multi-course meals with menus that change daily. Some evenings the staff will arrange a beach barbecue.
