Mumbo Island Lodge

Mumbo Island Camp is a beautiful eco-camp situated within Lake Malawi National Park. Mumbo is very much an eco-camp, making it perfect for those looking for a truly rustic sandals and surf experience.

Mumbo Island Camp is a beautiful eco-camp situated on an uninhabited island within Lake Malawi National Park. The island is tiny – 1km in diameter – and accessible only by means of a short 45 minute boat ride in a traditional fishing boat (no motorised boats are allowed on this section of Lake Malawi).

Mumbo Island Camp’s public areas and guest rooms are spread across the island. The main area of Mumbo houses the lounge, dining area, bar, a small gift shop and water sports gazebo (stocked with snorkelling equipment, kayaks and wet suits), while the rooms are located on a smaller satellite island which is reached by a wooden walkway. The rooms are spaced well apart around the island so as to ensure privacy – each room has a fabulous view of Lake Malawi. The guest areas also make the most of the views, and are mostly built above the beach on large boulders.

Mumbo is very much an eco-camp. Decidedly rustic, there is no electricity on the island. Lighting is by paraffin lamps and the water is solar heated.

This is a wonderful place to totally unwind and relax, either on the beach or on your private verandah, though those who enjoy a more active beach break will also find plenty of ways to keep themselves occupied at Mumbo. The lake is crystal clear and shoals of colourful fish can be found offshore Mumbo – the lack of motor boats make this region perfect for snorkelling and kayaking. Birding is varied here and the island has some marked trails for walkers.

Accommodation

Mumbo Island offers 5 twin rooms (one can be converted to a double) and a two-bedroom family room. The construction is very simple – reed and thatch with private deck with lake views, comfortable chairs and a hammock – allowing the rooms to blend in sympathetically with the surrounding natural environment. Inside, the rooms are small but comfortable, and furnished with colourful local fabrics and mosquito nets on the beds. There is a small bedside table and hanging space for clothes. Kangas are also provided.

The bathroom consists of a bucket shower. Eco-friendly shampoo, soap and shower gel are provided. The loo is separate and both bathroom and loo are accessed by a small wooden walkway.

Dining

Meals are served in the thatched dining area overlooking the lake. Breakfast and dinner are light buffets, while dinner is a three-course affair.
