Mowani Mountain Camp is a masterfully sculpted eco-lodge, situated amid granite boulders on a high rocky kopje in the southern Damaraland. Sister property to Camp Kipwe, Mowani is ideally positioned for those exploring the Damaraland on a self-drive holiday. From its high vantage point it enjoys fabulous views of the Abu-Huab Valley (desert elephant territory!) and, beyond it, the Brandberg. It offers easy access to the world-famous rock art sites at Twyfelfontein.

Accommodation

Mowani Mountain Camp’s 15 rooms nestle among granite boulders and African myrrh trees on the top of a rocky outcrop. They are unique, dome-shaped tents, elevated on stilts and topped with thatch so as to blend in with the terracotta landscape. Outwardly simple in appearance, inside they are brightly furnished in a subtle but stylish Afro-ethnic style. They feature generous king-size beds and hand-carved wooden furniture, decked out in vibrant fabrics. The bathrooms are similarly rustic – all handmade ceramics, brass and wrought iron.

Of Mowani’s 15 rooms, 6 are superior view, 7 superior, 1 a mini-suite, and the last a full suite. The superior view rooms enjoy a better view of the valley and surrounding mountains, and are worth the marginal upgrade cost. The mini-suite is let down by a poor view, but the full suite is fabulous, with an indoor and outdoor bathroom (with free-standing bathtub), private dinner deck, and comfortable lounge – perfect for honeymooners!

Dining

Breakfast is a generous buffet to be enjoyed leisurely (there’s no early start at Mowani – game drives depart mid-morning) in the lodge’s pole-and-thatch dining room with a view of the mountains. Lunch is a three-course affair served in the lodge or, if on a full-day activity, as a picnic.

Dinner is a beautifully presented four-course meal served by candlelight in the dining area or on your private deck, normally preceded by sundowner drinks served on a fabulous rock-top view point.
