Manta Resort

Pemba Island, East Africa

Manta Resort

One of the first resorts to open on Pemba, the Manta Resort enjoys a fabulous location on a long stretch of beach on the far north of the island – a 90-minute drive from the island’s capital, Chake-Chake.

Much of Manta Resort’s appeal, as distinct from that of other East African luxury beach lodges, is in the island of Pemba itself. Pemba is a very fertile island of gentle hills and valleys dotted with clove, coconut, mango and other plantations. It is much quieter than neighbouring Zanzibar, with far fewer resorts. The wildlife is particularly special, and not just the marine life; Manta Resort is close to the Ngezi Rainforest, home to vervet monkeys, red colobus monkeys, the Pemba flying fox, and lots of birdlife. Snorkelling, diving, deep sea fishing and sea cruising are wonderful here and, for those who want something truly unique, there is the option of a night or two in Manta Resort's fabulous underwater villa, surrounded by pristine coral and an abundance of tropical fish!

Accommodation

Manta Resort has 18 simply furnished rooms which fall into three categories. There are 6 spacious air- conditioned seafront villas with king size beds, large bathrooms and a terrace facing the ocean with private plunge pool and fabulous sunset views. In addition, there are 4 superior garden rooms set slightly back from the beach with partial sea views (through the foliage). Each has air conditioning, en suite bathroom and terrace. Two of these rooms are inter-connecting. The 7 standard garden rooms feature king-size beds with mosquito nets, en suite bathroom and veranda. These rooms do not have air conditioning or sea views - although all rooms are close to the ocean.

The floating Underwater Villa is Manta Resort’s most unique attraction. The villa has an underwater and above-water section; the landing deck houses the lounge and bathroom, from where steps take you up to a rooftop deck which has a large sunbed suitable for sunbathing and for sleeping under the stars. The bottom terrace features the underwater bedroom, where each wall is fitted with large glass windows which, together with well-placed spotlights, offer amazing views of the marine life. Octopus can occasionally be seen attaching themselves to the windows!

On arrival at Manta Resort you will be introduced to your personal ‘fundi’, who will welcome you to the resort and look after you throughout your stay.
