La Residence Hue

Built in the 1930s as the home of the French governor of Hue, La Residence Hue is the best hotel in town, standing out for its convenient location directly opposite the Imperial Citadel and stylish Art Deco aesthetic.

Located on the banks of the Perfume River, immediately opposite the Imperial Citadel, this distinctive Art Deco hotel, formerly the home of the French Governor of Hue, has been beautifully renovated while still preserving the style of a classic colonial villa. Much of La Residence Hue is in fact new, with the two main wings having been built in 2005, but they conform perfectly to the style of the original home, which forms the heart of the property.

La Residence Hue has a good claim to being the best hotel in Hue, thanks to its great location opposite the city’s most important historical monument, its lovely gardens and its excellent facilities, which include a huge pool overlooking the Perfume River.

Accommodation

La Residence Hue’s 122 rooms and suites all reflect the atmosphere of a bygone age, with gorgeous Art Deco features, including 1930s-style lamps and vanity mirrors, while also offering the expected modern conveniences (Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and AC/heating). All rooms have a private balcony or terrace and most have views across the river.

Only 10 of the rooms are located in the original mansion. These older rooms all differ in size and décor. The rooms in the new annexes are more uniform in style. It’s worth paying for an upgrade and staying in the original mansion if you can stretch to it, but the standard (superior) rooms are quite adequate if not—many of these actually enjoy a better view than the suites, overlooking the river rather than the gardens.

Dining

The dishes in Le Parfum restaurant are made using the freshest seasonal food, as well as the best imported items. Generous buffet breakfasts are provided daily, along with one of the best a la carte lunch and dinner menus in Hue. Snacks are offered at Le Gouverneur and the poolside bar.

One disadvantage of La Residence Hue is that you can’t walk to the restaurants in the town centre as you can from the more centrally-located hotels. Dining out in Hue will require a taxi ride.
