Kirawira Camp

Kirawira Camp is part of the Serena chain of hotels. A classic tented camp with a 'colonial' aesthetic, it has an enviable location in the Western Serengeti and offers a good standard of accommodation.

Kirawira Camp is an upmarket safari camp with a fine location on a high hill in the Western Serengeti, from where it enjoys wonderful views of the Grumeti River and the savannah plains. It's part of the Serena hotel chain, which encompasses a number of large hotels in East Africa, but it differs from the other hotels in their portfolio in that it is small and relatively exclusive.

Kirawira ticks the right boxes, and while it doesn't particularly stand out among the many upmarket lodges in the Serengeti, it is very good value for a camp of this category. It pitches itself as a traditional 'colonial-era' tented safari camp, and certainly the living areas—with their Victorian repro furniture, Persian rugs, Edwardian writing tables and polished wooden floors—manage to look the part. Some will find the tone a bit forced, and the stiff aesthetic does somewhat carry over into the overall atmosphere at Kirawira, which is formal, but others will appreciate the attention to detail and the attentive service.

Accommodation

There are 25 tents at Kirawira, all generous in size and built on high wooden platforms so as to make the most of the views. Each has a private verandah at the front, while thatched roofs provide shade and help keep the interiors cool. At the back the rooms open onto an en-suite bathroom, with separate toilet and outdoor shower. The interiors are comfortably furnished with four-poster beds and reproduction furniture.

Dining

Meals are served in the indoor dining rooms with a view of the plains. Tasty full-English breakfasts to start the day, followed later by a plated lunch and a multi-course dinner. Kirawira has a well-stocked wine cellar.
