Khwai River Lodge

One of the Okavango Delta's oldest safari lodges, Khwai River Lodge is a substantial lodge with hotel-style facilities and a great location in a game-rich region of the park.

Khwai River Lodge is one of the Okavango Delta's oldest safari lodges. It's a substantial lodge, with fourteen guest rooms and resort-style facilities (including pool and spa) situated in Moremi Game Reserve, in the central Okavango. This location offers reliably good game-viewing, in a region that is renowned for its large mammal concentrations, including prolific big cat populations. Lion, elephant and buffalo sightings are common, and cheetah, leopard and wild dog are also occasionally seen.

Though it is one of the older safari lodges in the Okavango, Khwai has been through several renovations. Whereas earlier iterations tended towards the budget end of the market, the Khwai River Lodge that stands today is a plush, opulent lodge, ideal for those who want a comfortable camp rather than a wild bush experience. It has fourteen tents, stretched out in a long line (the camp covers a distance of about 1km!), and at the centre a huge canvas lounge/dining area on raised timber decking, overlooking the river valley.

Facilities at Khwai River Lodge include a large swimming pool, spa, observation deck and, oddly, a gym.

Khwai River Lodge is among the few permanent, year-round camps within this region of the Okavango. The area can be busy with visitors during high season, however, as it offers some of the best game-viewing.

Accommodation

Accommodation at Khwai River Lodge is in 14 tents, though they'd really be better described as bungalows – these are permanent structures, made with thatch and brick, but with canvas walls. Each is built on raised wooden decking and overlooks the Khwai River.

The units are spacious inside and air-conditioned. Each has an en-suite bathroom, with shower (no tub) and hot and cold running water.

In addition to the tents, there is a single honeymoon suite, which offers a private pool and a more secluded location.

Dining

Your day at Khwai will typically start with a light breakfast before the morning game activity, followed by a substantial brunch on return to the lodge. Dinner is a three-course fixed menu, served in the dining area. Private dining on the deck of your tent is also an option. Tea, coffee and snacks are offered throughout the day.
