Joy's Camp

Shaba Reserve, Kenya

Joy's Camp

Occupying the same spot as Joy Adamson's tented home, Joy's Camp overlooks a busy watering hole in Shaba National Reserve, a remote and little visited pocket of Kenya.

Joy’s Camp is an isolated little safari retreat built on the site of Joy Adamson’s original tented home in Shaba Reserve. Few visitors make it to Shaba and Samburu, a semi-arid environment with lots of rocky terrain and kopjes, interspersed with patches of dry acacia forest and irrigated by natural springs which sustain an abundance of wildlife.

Joy’s Camp overlooks one such spring, ensuring excellent game-viewing throughout the year. Lion, elephant, giraffe and large herds of buffalo and giraffe can often be seen in front of the camp, jostling for watering rights.

Accommodation

Ten chic canvas bedrooms are set above ground on raised wooden platforms ensuring stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The tents are colourfully furnished with handmade fabrics and local crafts made of wood and glass. Each tent opens onto a private verandah with a view.

Dining

The menus at Joy’s Camp emphasise Italian flavours. Bush meals along the Ewaso Nyiro River and Gorge are truly memorable experiences.
