Jongomero Camp

Ruaha National Park, Tanzania

Jongomero Camp

Jongomero Camp is situated in the remote southern region of Ruaha National Park, on the banks of Jongomero Sand River. It offers beautiful tented suites suitable for couples and honeymooners.

Managed by the Selous Safari Company, who operate a number of luxury bush camps in southern Tanzania, Jongomero stands out as one of the most luxurious camps in Ruaha National Park. It sits in the southern region of the park, far removed from the busy Mwagusi area where most camps are located, and has its own private airstrip allowing for easy access to northern Tanzania and the coast.

Jongomero’s location is a blessing and a curse. The camp is exceptionally remote, with no other camps anywhere near, meaning you aren’t likely to see many other vehicles while on safari. But this region of the park doesn’t offer the best game-viewing. Jongomero compensates by offering excellent walking and fly camping safaris, which provide a nice change of pace from driven safaris and really allow you to get up close to the natural environment. Nevertheless, you shouldn’t come here expecting the sort of big game viewing that is possible in the busier northern regions of the park. (The game viewing has allegedly improved in recent years as the Ruaha Park boundaries have been expanded, meaning Jongomero no longer finds itself on the perimeter of the park).

Accommodation

Jongomero features very comfortable open-air guest areas set under thatch. The lounge, dining area and pool overlook the seasonal Jongomero River, which attracts a good mix of game in the dry season. There are eight guest tents, spread out along the banks of the river on raised wooden platforms. Inside they are very spacious and beautifully furnished, with polished wooden floors, thick Persian rugs, leather chairs and large double beds. They open at the back onto large bathrooms, with dual wash basins, flush loos, and showers (supplied with hot running water). There isn’t a more comfortable camp in the Ruaha.

Dining

The staff at Jongomero really go out of the way to make meals feel like special occasions. The menus change daily and are always creative. So too are the venues: one evening you might find yourself dining by candlelight on the dry river bed, the next in the sheltered dining area, or in the wild bush under the stars. Private dining is available on request, but meals are usually taken around a shared dining table.

Child Policy

Jongomero Camp takes children over the age of 6. There’s a pool and the tents are large and can be adapted to suit families. Do note, however, that the camp is remote and unfenced. We would recommend Jongomero to families with older children only.
