Ikuka Camp

Ruaha National Park, Tanzania

Ikuka Camp

Ikuka is an owner-run camp situated on the Mwagusi escarpment within Ruaha National Park, from where it enjoys some of the best views of the Ruaha Valley.

Ikuka is a small camp comprising seven beautifully designed tented rooms, one of which is a family room. Located on the Mwagusi escarpment, the camp offers excellent views as well as easy access to the game-rich area surrounding the Mwagusi Confluence, the focal point for game drives into Ruaha National Park.

Though less-visited than its northern counterparts, Ruaha has among the greatest diversity of wildlife of all of Tanzania’s national parks. Predators found here include the elusive wild dog, lion, hyena and leopard. Large herds of elephant are a fixture along the Ruaha River, while Ruaha is also home to giraffe, buffalo, zebra, jackal, hippo, and much more. Birding is phenomenal with close to 600 species recorded. Ikuka Camp’s owner – Mark Sheridan Johnson – is a superb guide & photographer who often leads walking safaris from the camp. He is always happy to help guests set up that ‘perfect’ wildlife shot.

Ikuka Camp is closed April and May.

Accommodation

Ikuka Camp offers seven open-sided rooms spaced out along the escarpment, all with views of the Ruaha Valley. The family room can accommodate five comfortably.

Ikuka’s rooms have thatched roofs and full-length cream curtains to provide shade and keep the interiors cool. Soft natural fabrics and materials are locally sourced and stylish. All rooms have king-sized beds with reading lamps either side, a comfy sofa and coffee table. The ensuite bathrooms are generous in size with flush toilets and stone washbasins with a constant supply of hot water. Outside each room is a private veranda with a view over the escarpment.

Ikuka’s seven rooms are centred on a central guest area with swimming pool and deck, and open lounge/dining area under thatch. A second floor provides a relaxing hideaway with a small library and wonderful views. There is also a powerful telescope – perfect for star gazing!
