Hotel de la Paix

Hotel de la Paix | Luang Prabang, Laos

Hotel de la Paix

Sister hotel to 3 Nagas, the Hotel de la Paix is a 5-star resort situated on the outskirts of Luang Prabang, on the site of the town’s old colonial-era prison. It features 23 suites overlooking a fabulous courtyard and swimming pool.

Set against a mountain backdrop on the outskirts of Luang Prabang, Hotel de la Paix is a modern five-star resort with gorgeous rooms and a wealth of amenities. It is the sister property to 3 Nagas, a stylish boutique hotel situated in Luang Prabang’s Old Quarter, though it features a much more modern aesthetic and better facilities than its sister resort.

Though it has only 23 guestrooms, Hotel de la Paix is a substantial resort, built around a huge central courtyard containing a dining terrace, pool and well-maintained gardens. It’s all beautifully-presented, so much so that it’s hard to believe that this was once the site of the town’s only prison, before it was bought and converted into a resort.

Hotel de la Paix’s location on the outskirts of town ensures a good level of peace and quiet, though it does require a 15-20 minute walk to the town centre (complimentary bicycles are offered and the hotel is introducing a shuttle service, though this wasn’t in place at the time of our last visit in early 2014). The main advantage of being on the outskirts of town, however, is the extra space and facilities, including a large pool, which wouldn’t be allowed within a several mile radius of the Old Quarter. Many who stay at Hotel de la Paix book it in conjunction with 3 Nagas, enjoying a night in the town centre followed by a couple of day’s relaxation outside of town, which we find works very well.

Accommodation

Hotel de la Paix offers 23 suites, divided into four categories: Garden, Heritage, Pool and Governor. All of the rooms, including the lower category suites, are situated around the courtyard and open onto their own private gardens with daybed (and a plunge pool in the case of the higher category rooms). Inside they are beautifully appointed with large four-poster beds, rosewood furnishings and vibrant fabrics.

The Garden and Heritage Suites are identical except for the fact that the latter are housed in the original, UNESCO registered buildings, whereas the Garden rooms are in newer units. The four Pool suites are located at the corners of the courtyard, and feature larger L-shaped gardens with pool and loungers.

The two Governor suites are huge, and feature separate living and sleeping areas, indoor and outdoor bathrooms, and a large garden (though it lacks a pool).

Amenities in all rooms include air-con, room safe, minibar, media centre (LCD TV, iPod dock, DVD Player), and Wi-Fi connection.

Dining

Hotel de la Paix offers two restaurants, the Sa Bai, which serves a varied menu of European and Asian dishes, and Kaipen, which offers seasonal Lao cuisine. Kaipen is usually closed in low-season, which was when we last visited Hotel de la Paix.

Hotel de la Paix also offers in-room dining, so you can enjoy candle-lit dinners in your own private garden.
