Footsteps Camp

This remote bush camp is part of the Footsteps Walking Trails, one of the best options for wild walking safaris in the Okavango.

Footsteps Camp (Okavango) is a mobile camp situated in a remote region of the Okavango Delta*, though its precise location changes on a regular basis. It's part of the Footsteps Walking Trails, one of the best and most cost-effective walking safari programmes in Botswana. Very much a back-to-basics experience, the trails are intended to provide a truly wild bush safari.

Footsteps Camp is a simple, light mobile safari camp – just three Meru-style guest tents and a dining mess. The emphasis here is on the wilderness experience. While the accommodation is basic, the service and guiding is fantastic. Footsteps is run by Ker & Downey, one of Botswana's most reputable safari operators.

* Footsteps has a sister camp with the same name in Linyanti.

Accommodation

Footsteps Camp offers just three small and discreet twin-bed Meru tents, each en-suite (bucket shower with hot water on demand). The loos are long drops. The interiors are simply but comfortably furnished, with twin beds, wardrobes, and side dressers with mirrors.

In a nice touch, Footstep's also has a bath tent equipped with a genuine Victorian bathtub, just in case you want to live out the full 19th-century safari experience!

Dining

You'll be amazed at what the chef manages to prepare in such remote conditions - all of the food is prepared in a ground oven! Expect lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, fish and cheeses, accompanied by South African wines.

Facilities

Dining mess tent

Solar-power throughout camp

Activities

The emphasis at Footsteps Camp is very much on walking, though mokoro safaris and game drives are also offered (depending on the weather and other conditions).

You will typically take morning and evening walks with the guides, lasting perhaps four hours each. Full-day walks are an option, but must be arranged in advance.

Don't be put off by the name 'Footsteps Walking Trails', the walks do not follow precise, fixed routes, but rather give you the opportunity to explore the region in depth.

Child Policy

Children over the age of 7 can be accommodated, though parents should be aware that this is a wild bush camp. Footsteps runs a Young Explorers programme, intended to provide more accessible walking experiences for children.
