De Opstal is a 4-star guest house located in the picturesque Schoemanshoek Valley, just 12km from Oudtshoorn and the famous Cango Caves.
De Opstal comprises a group of traditional Little Karoo homesteads, fully restored and fitted with modern amenities, and set in gorgeous, rural surroundings. It's a charming, intimate retreat, with a swimming pool and a lovely farmhouse restaurant serving delicious home-cooked meals.
We've always had great experiences with De Opstal. The atmosphere is welcoming, the decor bright and lively, and the setting superb. It's not as pretentious as some of South Africa's guesthouses and boutique hotels, and the rates are reasonable. That said, De Opstal is not a luxury hotel, as it is sometimes presented.
Accommodation
De Opstal offers 20 suites. The standard suite consists of a sitting area, en-suite bathroom, bedroom, private patio, fireplace and amenities including hairdryer, satellite TV, tea/coffee making facilities and air-con.
All of the suites are individually decorated and personalised. Some of the decor is, frankly, a bit odd - a lime green settee in one room, a velvet chaise lounge in another; whichever suite you get, expect lots of bright colours! - but to some extent this suits the informal atmosphere. And the rooms are very comfortable, some even with their own cosy fireplace!
Dining
Generous cooked breakfasts are served in the dining room or outdoors on clear mornings. Dinner is a la carte, and prepared with plenty of local ingredients (ostrich features heavily on the menu). Vegetarians can be catered for, but do give advance notice.
Lunch is not served at the hotel, but picnic boxes can be supplied on request.
The bar has a good selection of spririts and local wines.
