Chongwe River Camp

Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia

Chongwe River Camp

Chongwe River Camp is set in a game management area just outside the Lower Zambezi National Park. It offers fabulous views of the Lower Zambezi as well generally superb game viewing.

Chongwe River Camp enjoys a fabulous location on the confluence of the Chongwe and Zambezi rivers, overlooking both the Lower Zambezi and the mountains which border the park. This is a wonderful area for relaxed game-viewing. There are no tarred roads here meaning access is by light aircraft or river boat only.

Chongwe River Camp is shaded by mature yellow Acacia trees which provide food for the elephants who can usually be found in front of the camp (and often inside it!) Often also sighted in the region are huge pods of hippo, warthog, antelope, baboon, vervet monkeys and an array of predators, including lion, leopard (who love the large trees!) and hyena. There are lots of buffalo and very occasionally wild dog can be sighted.

Though situated just outside the National Park boundaries, Chongwe is in a game management area, which ensures good game-viewing. The park and game management area are unfenced allowing the game to wander freely between them. This makes Chongwe a great value camp compared to others inside the park.

Accommodation

There are 9 tented rooms furnished with hand crafted furniture and local textiles. All the rooms overlook the river and each has a ceiling fan, huge bathroom with hot and cold running water, shower, loo, and dressing area. The tents are thatch covered, which helps to keep them cool. (Our absolute preference is for tent no. 9, which is right at the end of the camp; when we stayed there we had elephant and leopard passing our room at night – magical!)

In addition there are 2 fabulous suites. The Albida Suite overlooks the river and consists of 2 large bedrooms with a lounge and dining area. The décor is very stylish and incorporates African fabrics, plush sofas and wooden furniture. The outdoor bathroom has a Victorian style bath as well as a shower, double washbasins and toilet. At the front is a plunge pool and fire pit where you can sit and enjoy your sundowners watching the sunset over the river and the stars as they appear.

The Cassia Suite is just a lovely as the Albida but with only 1 bedroom making it a perfect choice for honeymooners.

Both of the suites cater for private dining or guests can dine in the main camp if preferred.
