Chobe Elephant Camp

Chobe Elephant Camp

Chobe Elephant Camp is a low-cost safari lodge situated in the remote Western region of Chobe National Park, just outside Ngoma Gate in the Chobe Forest Reserve.

Opened in 2013, Chobe Elephant Camp is the newest addition to the Bush Ways collection of safari camps (remote, low-cost bush camps). Like its sister camp, Sango, it has the advantage of a quiet location, remotely situated in the Chobe Forest Reserve on the less-frequented western perimeter of Chobe National Park, where it perches on a high rocky ridge overlooking the Chobe River. From this isolated position Chobe Elephant Camp offers guided game drives and river boat safaris in the National Park (access is via the western Ngoma Gate, approx. 10 minutes’ drive from the camp).

Chobe Elephant Camp is a fairly simple camp; comfortable but without the luxury trappings that are a feature of many Botswanan safari camps – instead, the emphasis is very much on the game-viewing experience. Chobe Elephant Camp is not without character, however. The main communal area, housing a cosy lounge/bar and spacious open-air dining area, has an old safari ranch vibe, with its thick ceiling rafters and corrugated iron roofing. It’s a lovely spot to relax between game drives, as is the small pool deck.

Those wanting to escape the crowds will find the small, isolated Chobe Elephant Camp to be a great choice. The guiding is excellent and the rates very reasonable. It's a good alternative to many of Chobe's other budget camps, which are largely situated on the busy north-eastern corner of the park, closer to Kasane and the often-busy Sedudu Gate.

Chobe Elephant Camp is open year-round.

Accommodation

Chobe Elephant Camp offers twelve individual chalets, scattered along the edge of the escarpment with a view to the river below. Each has a private verandah with canvas chairs, from where you can sit and watch the game crossing the floodplains below. Inside, the rooms are fairly spacious, with double/twin beds draped with mosquito netting, seating area and en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower. All rooms are equipped with ceiling fans.

One of the chalets is a family unit with two bedrooms (twin/double) - both en-suite - and shared sitting room.

Dining

A light breakfast – breads, pastries, fruit, cereals - is served early morning before game activities, followed by a generous brunch of cooked dishes and salads on your return (picnic lunches are provided for full-day activities). Dinner is a three course set menu, with soup to start. Do give advance notice of any dietary requirements.

Meals are served indoors or out depending on the weather.
