Stanley's Camp

Stanley’s Camp is a classically-styled tented bush camp with a marvellous location on the southern tip of Chief's Island, just outside Moremi Game Reserve in the central Okavango Delta.

Stanley’s Camp is a classic tented bush camp situated on Chief’s Island, in a private concession just outside Moremi Game Reserve. This places it in the very heart of the Okavango Delta, where there is navigable water all-year round.

Stanley’s is an unpretentious bush camp, where the emphasis is very much on the game-viewing. While certainly comfortable, it doesn’t try to offer the same levels of luxury as many other Delta camps. It follows a classic design—at the heart of the camp is a large raised deck, shaped around, and supported by, a giant sausage tree, and sheltered under canvas. This comprises the lounge and dining area, and is simply furnished with easy chairs and individual dining tables. From this central area, sandy footpaths lead to eight raised Meru-style bush tents, positioned in the treeline overlooking the plains in front of the camp.

Game-viewing at Stanley’s Camp is terrific. The emphasis is on land-based activities, notably walking safaris and day and night 4x4 game drives, though water-based safaris are also offered when the water levels are high enough (usually Jun-Sept.) The game in this region of the Delta is impressive, with the big cats—lion, leopard and cheetah—well-represented, and rare wild dog also occasionally sighted. Of special note, however, are the elephants. Stanley and sister camp Baines offer a unique ‘elephant experience’, which gives you a chance to walk with three semi-habituated elephant in the bush, accompanied by experts Doug and Sandi Groves.

Accommodation

Stanley’s Camp offers eight classic Meru tents, pitched on raised wooden decks. The tents are simply but comfortably furnished, with cosy twin/double beds, canvas wardrobes, writing desks, and a few nice touches such as an ice bucket with complimentary sherry. The en-suite bathrooms feature flush loos and shower cubicles. Each tent has a private verandah, complete with hammock and comfy chairs, and, of course, a marvellous view of the floodplains.

Dining

Cooked breakfasts, delicious brunches (often served in the bush), and three-course evening meals with a choice of menus, are offered at Stanley's Safari Camp. The bar is well-stocked with wines and spirits.
