236 Hurumzi

Located in the heart of Stone Town, 236 Hurumzi rises above other Stone Town guesthouses by providing elegant, traditionally furnished, airy rooms and a Tower Top Restaurant with a stunning view.

Positioned in the heart of Stone Town, 236 Hurumzi (formerly Emerson & Green) is one of Zanzibar's oldest and best established hotels.

236 Hurumzi opened as a hotel in the early 90s, and has since acquired a reputation as one of the best places to stay in town, thanks to its traditionally furnished rooms, its classic Swahili aesthetic, and its Tower Top Restaurant with a stunning view. It occupies three old Stone Town buildings, the oldest of which dates back to the start of 19th century.

The second tallest building in Stone Town after the Sultan’s Palace, 236 Hurumzi's Tower Top Restaurant sits among minarets, spires and towers as an integral part of Stone Town's skyline. Originally built in the 19th-century as a private merchant’s home, it remains one of Stone Town’s most recognisable landmarks to this day.

In the 1990s, 236 Hurumzi, or Emerson & Green as it was then known, was Stone Town’s premier boutique hotel. Today it faces much greater competition, including from a number of similar boutique hotels which offer a similar blend of traditional Swahili furnishings and modern amenities. But 236 Hurumzi continues to stand out for its terrific location, individually decorated rooms, and marvellous restaurant.

Accommodation

236 Hurumzi has just 17 guest rooms, all of them individually decorated and equipped with full en-suite facilities. The newly built wing of the hotel features the most original and luxurious suites of all, many of which boast private verandahs, teahouses or balconies, and stunning views of Stone Town and the Indian Ocean.

Dining

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in 236 Hurumzi's Tower Top Restaurant, a Stone Town landmark famous more for its view than its menu. There is also a smaller café-restaurant on the 1st floor of the hotel serving light meals and drinks throughout the day.
