Weddell Sea Voyage

11-day Antarctic Cruise

Weddell Sea Voyage

Explore the Weddell Sea and the Antarctic Peninsula in this 11-day cruise organised by Oceanwide Expeditions and sold by Gane and Marshall. During the course of the voyage, you will have the chance to land on the Antarctic Continent and visit an Emperor Penguin colony by helicopter.

Outline Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Set sail from Ushuaia

Set sail from Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost city in the world.

  2. Day 2-3: At sea

The next two days are at sea, as we cross the Drake Passage and the Antarctic Convergence.

  3. Day 4: Weddell Sea

Today we reach the Weddell Sea. Depending on the weather and ice conditions, we will try to access the Antarctic Sound on the eastern Antarctic Peninsula, navigating huge tabular icebergs to get there.

  4. Day 5-6: Emperor Penguin colony

Helicopters provide a great advantage in this region of the Antarctic, which is difficult to access even by small boats. They will support us in our goal of the next three days – to reach the Emperor Penguin rookery.

  5. Day 7: Devil & Vega Island

Assuming the conditions on days 5 and 6 were favourable and you were able to visit the Penguin colony, today we will try to visit Devil and Vega Islands, or alternatively, Hope Bay.

  6. Day 8: Half Moon and Deception Islands

This morning we visit Half Moon Island. Here you will have the chance to see several different varieties of Penguin, the Chinstrap and Gentoo, as well as Elephant and Weddell Seals.

  7. Day 9-10: At sea

The next two days are spent at sea, as you journey north into the Drake Passage, retracing your course back to Ushuaia.

  8. Day 11: Arrive Ushuaia

Arrive in Ushuaia in the morning and disembark after breakfast.
