Kafue National Park
(Zambia)
Kafue National Park, the largest in Zambia, provides a unique safari in an exceptional wilderness area.
The park is huge. Much of the area is covered in miombo woodland and forest but in areas opens out to long stretches of grassland where antelopes graze. The main Kafue River is the heart of the park and forms many floodplains, home to large populations of hippo and crocodile. Tall shady hardwoods overhang its banks and in places the river forms occasional palm tree islands, home for many bird species.
The park is famous for its huge herds of lechwe, which attract the large predators, most notably lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog. Elephant, buffalo, oribi, reedbuck, Liechtenstein’s hartebeest, blue wildebeest, kudu, roan and zebra are also among the game found within Kafue.
In and around Kafue
Walking and driven safaris are offered at almost all lodges and camps. Boat trips and canoeing are also possible. Fishing is excellent.
