South Africa:
Eastern Cape
The Eastern Cape is one of the most diverse regions of South Africa geographically and culturally.
The region occupies much of the semi-arid greater Karoo, Tsitsikamma Forest, the Garden Route and a number of bustling towns and cities, including Port Elizabeth and Graaff-Reinet. Inland, there are a number of malaria-free reserves offering brilliant game-viewing opportunities, including the Tsitsikamma and Addo Elephant National Parks as well as Shamwari, Kwande and Kwantu Reserves.
The region is home to a rich history, having been transformed from a settler’s outpost in the early 19th century to a thriving tourist centre in the 20th century. A true frontier country in the early 19th century, many peoples met and clashed in battle along the Eastern Cape. White settlers fought with the local Zulu, Xhosa, Pondo, Nguni and Sotho tribes. Today, the region remains culturally diverse and a number of museums, ruins and san rock art recall the turbulent past.
In and around the Eastern Cape
This is a malaria-free zone making it an ideal safari destination for families with small children. The Addo Elephant Park is the most popular safari reserve in the region and home to 170 elephants, 21 black rhino and the last Cape buffalo.
Grahamstown is a bustling town and a must for art lovers, especially in March when the huge National Arts Festival takes place.
Make a stop in East London to visit South Africa’s only river port and then continue to the Wild Coast, where we recommend that you visit the Nelson Mandela museum in Qunu, where he grew up.
For beach lovers, the relaxed and friendly Jeffrey’s Bay is perfect.
