Windhoek by Reinke Denkmal

Namibia:
Windhoek and Central Region

Windhoek, Namibia's busy capital, is a brilliant tourist spot with impressive architecture, lots of good restaurants, and easy access to nearby reserves.

Windhoek is a wonderful town to while away the day. In downtown Windhoek you can find many examples of German colonial architecture, including the equestrian monument, the Alte Feste fort, Christuskirche (Christ’s Church), the well-kept gardens of Tintenpalast (Ink Palace), the House of Parliament, and the neatly preserved railway station northwest of the city centre. The pedestrian area of Post Mall Street is ideal for souvenir shopping, and also host to the famous meteorite shower of Gibeon. There are also a number of art galleries and museums in the area.

Daan Viljoen Game Reserve, west of the capital in the Khomas Hochland Mountains, offers several hiking trails through its hilly, park-like scenery. About 120 km to the west, one of Namibia’s most striking mountains rises from the Khomas Hochland, Gamsberg. The thermal baths at Gross Barmen, about 80 km north of Windhoek and 10 km south-west of Okahandja, are fed by a hot spring. The water is said to relieve rheumatism. Okahandja is one of the best places to buy wood carvings.

Those looking for adventure will not want to miss Arnhem Cave, 120 km south-east of Windhoek. On a tour of up to three hours part of the cave system is explored. It is 4.5 km long in total.

South of Windhoek, you find Rehoboth, which is famous for its hot springs. Further to the south is Hardap Dam and Recreational Park near Mariental, Namibia’s largest artificial lake. Over the years Hardap Dam has become a refuge for birds.

In and around Windhoek
Windhoek is normally only used as an over night stop-off point on arrival or before you depart Namibia, but it is well worth spending a day in the city to visit some of the art galleries and museums.

If you do not want to stay in Windhoek, you will find good quality guest houses and lodges within an hours drive from the city.
