Namibia:
Swakopmund
Swakopmund is Namibia’s largest coastal town and traditional 'summer capital'. Almost entirely isolated and surrounded by the sweeping expanses of the Namib Desert, one of the largest wilderness areas in the world, Swakopmund retains a bustling atmosphere of which you would never expect to find in the middle of a desert. The architecture is not typical either, with a Germanic colonial influence that pervades many of the towns’ buildings, clearly visible in the Railway Station, State House, and the towering spires.
Swakopmund is a busy entertainment centre and the nightlife is active. However, the atmosphere is very friendly and perfectly suited to those who just wish to relax, explore the town and enjoy the nearby Atlantic Ocean.
In and around Swakopmund
Swakopmund is the adventure capital of Namibia, with many activities on offer: sand boarding, sky diving, quad biking, camel and horse rides, and off-road driving are all available. Other activities include microlight flights, ballooning, helicopter rides and dune walks.
Within the city, there are a number of museums and an aquarium, and the beach remains a popular spot.
Swakopmund can also act as a perfect base from which to explore the Skeleton Coast and surrounding sights such as Cape Cross and Walvis Bay.
