Namibia:
Etosha National Park
Like all of Namibia's landscapes, Etosha National Park is immense. It is the third largest national park in the world and boasts a truly unique landscape, as well as a diversity of wildlife rarely matched anywhere in the world.
Much of the park is occupied by the Etosha pan, a huge saline desert surrounded by waterholes. During the dry season thousands of animals come to these waterholes to drink, giving you a wonderful opportunity to sit and observe the wildlife. During the rainy season, the pan itself fills with water attracting a multitude of wading birds, including flamingo.
The woodlands, grasslands and perennial springs surrounding the pan provide a habitat for over 114 species of mammals, often in large numbers. These include lion, leopard, elephant, black and white rhino, cheetah, giraffe, zebra and many antelope as well as over 340 species of birds.
In and around Etosha
Game-viewing is usually conducted by vehicle in Etosha due to the sheer size of the region. There is, however, plenty of opportunity for walking safaris, fly-camping and hides. Rhino tracking is also possible at some of the lodges.
