Caprivi
(Namibia)
Situated in the north-east of Namibia, the Caprivi region is a narrow strip of land, 450 km long and up to about 100 km wide. Caprivi borders on Angola and Zambia in the north, on Botswana in the south, and with its eastern tip even on Zimbabwe. Four large rivers serve as boundaries and also traverse the strip of land. With its tangled system of rivers, channels, floodplains and relatively generous rainfalls, the Caprivi Strip is the only part of Namibia where water is plentiful. The contrast to the arid main body of Namibia could hardly be more pronounced.
The wildlife, as such, is particularly rich and a number of reserves and parks have been set up, such as the Bwabwata, Mudumu and Mamili National Parks, and the Caprivi and Mahango Game Reserves. Birdlife is prolific - Mamili in particular is known for its birds.
Katima Mulilo, situated right on the Zambezi River, is the most densely populated town in the region. Its a lively town with a street market towards the centre.
In and around Caprivi
Caprivi is, for many, an access point to the Victoria Falls, the Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta. Many of the reserves and parks in the region, however, are excellent and certainly worth a visit.
