Bazaruto Archipelago and Vilanculos
(Mozambique)
The Bazaruto archipelago is one of the most popular destinations in Mozambique, and with good reason. Strings of islands with long, pristine beaches sit scattered in this beautiful part of the Indian Ocean, ideal for water sport enthusiasts or those just wishing to relax.
The area is also a natural paradise, home to all manner of wildlife. A marine national park covers most of the Bazaruto archipelago protecting the immaculate marine life and stunning coral. The Dugongs are perhaps the most spectacular of the marine mammals, often spotted grazing on marine grass meadows found in sheltered bays. There are five species of dolphins found in the area and in deeper waters Humpback whales can be seen in the summer months and whale sharks from December to February. Other species to be found include manta rays, potato bass, marlin and sailfish.
For the birding enthusiasts, over 164 different birds have been identified on the islands in habitats varying from the coastal dunes, open grasslands and fresh water lakes to savannah and acacia woodlands. Other animals to be seen are red-tailed squirrels, suni, and duiker, which have been re-introduced to the islands.
In and around Bazaruto & Vilanculos
The region offers excellent diving and snorkelling, as well as fishing, dhow boat trips, parasailing and a host of other water sports. We recommend a visit to Vilanculos which has a bustling market and a number of interesting sights.
