Samburu and Shaba National Parks
(Kenya)
The Samburu National Reserve is situated on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Kenya. The river attracts plenty of wildlife and gives life to Samburu's thorn shrub and very arid landscape.
Samburu is located within the lands of the colourful Samburu people, close relatives of Tanzania's Masai, and many lodges and camps will give you plenty of opportunity to interact with the locals.
The reserve also harbours several wildlife species rarely found elsewhere in large numbers. These include Grevy's zebra, the reticulated giraffe and the Beisa oryx, all of which are species found only north of the equator.
The reserve is relatively small and not particularly well known, but this adds to the appeal for many as Samburu offers a peaceful alternative to some of the more famous parks and reserves.
In and around Samburu & Shaba
Game drives are standard. Walking safaris, visits to the local villages and camel rides are also available with some lodges.
