Laikipia
(Kenya)
The Laikipia District of Kenya is located in the centre of the country, on the equator. It was developed in the last centuries as ranch land by colonialists, but is now famous as a vast bush wilderness the size of Wales.
The district is a vast plateau, with plains that stretch from the Great Rift Valley to magnificent escarpments which descend into the Northern Frontier District. These plains are physically diverse and scenically spectacular, covered by open grasslands, basalt hills, lonely kopjes and dense cedar forests, fed by the Ewaso Nyiro and Ewaso Narok rivers.
Running for 200 kilometres south of Laikipia, and forming part of the eastern wall of the Rift Valley are the Aberdares. This beautiful hill country is the source of great Kenyan rivers such as the Tana.
Wildlife in the region is excellent with one of the largest populations of elephant to be found in Africa, as well as the rare black rhino and a huge variety of other game.
In and around Laikipia
Walking safaris and game drives are standard. Some lodges also offer horse and camel riding, and the region is excellent for hiking and mountain biking.
There should be plenty of opportunity to interact with the local Masai.
