Okavango Delta
(Botswana)
The Okavango Delta is the world’s largest inland delta, and houses a diverse range of wildlife in its many ecosystems.
The Okavango River no longer has an outlet to the sea and so it empties onto the sands of the Kalahari Desert, irrigating some 15,000km² of land and forming the delta. This water entering the delta is unusually pure and spreads over the sand forming a maze of lagoons, channels, floodplains and small pockets of land.
The wildlife is incredibly diverse. Crocodiles and hippos populate the waters, while elephant, leopard, giraffe, cheetah, lion, baboon and a variety of antelope are all regularly seen. The birdlife is also prolific.
In and around the Okavango Delta
The region offers excellent game viewing, either by vehicle, foot or more likely, by boat.
