Botswana:
Chobe National Park and Linyanti
Chobe is one of the largest parks in Botswana, and without doubt, one of the most impressive.
Chobe strikes a total contrast to the Okavango Delta. The park is divided into four distinct eco-systems and vegetation varies from lush floodplains along the river, to dense forests of mopane and broadleaf in the interior, and large expanses of savannah and grassland in the Savuti area.
As a result, you can expect to see a wealth of game; large concentrations of lion, cheetah, hippo and zebra are to be found throughout the park, and above all, Chobe is home to the largest elephant concentration in Africa. The elephants can be seen in huge herds and are known to often wander the streets of Kasane, the largest town in the region. The Chobe elephant are migratory, making seasonal migrations of up to 200 kilometres in the southeast of the park, to which they disperse in the rains.
In the furthest corner of Chobe National Park lies the Linyanti. Secluded and remote, this short strip of swampy river frontage is reminiscent of the Okavango’s permanent waterways with papyrus-lined lagoons, reed-beds and a towering canopy of trees. The Linyanti Swamp covers an area of almost 900 square kilometres, which follows the river and fills the area between the converging courses of the Kwando and Linyanti rivers.
In and around Chobe & Linyanti
Game viewing is conducted mostly via 4x4 vehicles. Walking safaris are also popular as is fly-camping.
Many lodges and camps will also arrange boating safari trips and cultural tours of local villages and sights.
