Kungwe Beach Lodge

Located on the edge of Lake Tanganyika in Mahale National Park, Kungwe Beach Lodge enjoys one of the most remote and beautiful locations in east Africa.

Situated on the edge of Lake Tanganyika in Mahale National Park, Kungwe Beach Lodge enjoys one of the most beautiful and remote locations in all of Tanzania.

Mahale is famous for its wild chimpanzees, which are among the last of their kind to be found anywhere in the world (Mahale is home to approx. 800 of them). Tracking these fascinating creatures is the main reason people come to Mahale, but it is not the only reason. Mahale is also home to some of the most stunning, unspoiled scenery to be found in East Africa, including beautiful lakeshore beaches. Indeed it is so remote that it can only be accessed by light aircraft. There are no road routes into the park.

It is on one of these beaches that Kungwe Beach Lodge is found. Kungwe is in fact a relatively simple lodge, the 'value' option in Mahale, that is remarkable more for its location than its accommodation (but what a location it is!) It has a laidback atmosphere and offers comfortable accommodation in rustic beach bandas. As well as chimp tracking, Kungwe is a great for those who want to fish, as it is located on a part of Lake Tanganyika that offers some of the best lake fishing in Tanzania.

Kungwe is open between May and February. Those looking for a little extra luxury might consider the magnificent Greystoke Mahale.

Accommodation

There are 10 walk-in, tented bandas (including one triple) at Kungwe Beach Lodge. All are light, airy and spacious, and decorated in the style of traditional safari tents. They are built on raised wooden decks and simply furnished with double beds, wardrobes and bedside tables. The bathrooms are equipped with showers with hot running water and flush loos. At the front of each banda is a sheltered verandah with a view of the lake.

Dining

Kungwe's comfortable lounge/dining area is open-sided and shaped like a traditional dhow boat, but with a thatched roof. It is furnished with dhow couches and African antiques. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served here or on the beach. Beach barbecues are also offered at Kungwe.
