Pom Pom Camp

Pom Pom Camp is one of the Okavango's premier water-based safari camps, offering fantastic mokoro and motorboat safaris within the Nxabega Concession in the southern Delta region.

Pom Pom Camp is situated in the southern Okavango Delta, on a private island (Pom Pom) within the Nxabega Concession, just west of Moremi Game Reserve. This puts Pom Pom right in the heart of the Okavango wetlands, making the permanent camp ideally suited for water-based safaris (and much less suited to dry safaris). Though game drives are possible, most come to Pom Pom for the excellent mokoro safaris, which provide a chance to explore at leisure the idyllic waterways for which the Okavango is famous. Unlike many of the camps in the northern Delta, Pom Pom is not the best camp for those looking to see big game, or to track rare species such as wild dog. It offers an altogether more relaxed, tranquil safari experience.

Pom Pom is a lovely camp. Its design is typical of many of the camps in the Delta region, with an elevated, open-air thatched space at its heart, furnished in an understated style and incorporating lounge, bar and dining room. From here, steps lead down to a cosy fire pit overlooking the lagoon and a refreshing swimming pool. The raised viewing deck enjoys a great view of the surrounding plains and lagoon.

Pom Pom Camp is one of the more affordable luxury camps in the Delta, and is very easy to recommend to those who are keen on water-based activities, less so for those looking for a big game experience. Depending on the time of year you visit, the game-viewing experience here can be more limited than at other camps, but those looking for a relaxed safari will find much to like about this charming little camp.

Accommodation

Sandy footpaths lead from Pom Pom Camp's central hub to its nine, discretely positioned luxury tented suites. Each of the tents has been well positioned so as to enjoy a view of the lagoon while also taking advantage of the shade provided by the tall ebony trees that dot Pom Pom island. They are traditional Meru style tents, built on raised wooden decks. Inside, they are very comfortably furnished with bright fabrics, local carvings and old-fashioned wooden trunks adding a spot of colour and character to the interiors. Mesh windows allow in the breeze, and provide a glimpse of the lagoon outside.

The tents at Pom Pom Camp are all identical except for one which is a family unit with connecting rooms that sleep up to four.

Dining

Meals are served at the long teak dining table in the sheltered dining area or, on clear nights, outside around the firepit. Lunch and dinner are served as buffets and accompanied by a selection of wines. Do let us know if you have any special dietary requirements before travelling to Pom Pom.
