Nkwichi Lodge
(Manda Wilderness - Mozambique)
General Description
Nkwichi Lodge is a secluded beach retreat situated on the shores of Lake Niassa, Malawi, just across from Likoma Island. There are no roads within 10 miles of Nkwichi, and so this remote lodge has to be reached by boat, creating an atmosphere of seclusion from the moment you arrive. This location, and the fact that there is space for only 14 guests, make Nkwichi Lodge the most exclusive beach retreat in the region.
The beach is the central feature around which the lodge is built. The main building has a dining room raised high on a platform providing views out over the lake. The fig tree platform built amongst the enormous granite boulders on the lakeshore provides another popular spot for guests to dine or relax. Each of the 7 chalets is cleverly tucked into the trees along the lakeshore providing unique views across the crystal clear water. The chalets all vary in size and design depending on their setting but all are made of local wood, stone and grass thatch.
There is a great variety of activities to do, ranging from Likoma Island Tours, to a number of water sports, safaris in the Manda Wilderness Reserve and Dhow safaris around Lake Niassa.
Accommodation
There are 7 chalets in total, all individually decorated and located far enough apart to ensure privacy. The central feature in each chalet is the enormous, sturdy 4-poster bed, made of old tree trunks and covered in a beautifully crafted white mosquito net. Each chalet has its own en-suite bathroom which has been designed to allow you to bathe outside under the tree canopy in complete privacy. All of the bathrooms have showers hung from overhanging branches with hot and cold running water. Some have bathtubs.
Out in front of the chalets is a verandah covered with a thatched roof to shade guests from the midday sun. Guests can relax in the comfortable arm chairs or swing gently in a hammock reading a book or taking a siesta.
Dining
Fresh, local produce from the ‘kitchen gardens’ is used each day to prepare excellent cuisine, a blend of traditional African and international recipes. Breakfast is usually served on the Lakeshore Deck with beautiful views of Lake Niassa. Lunch is provided on day trips and excursions or can be enjoyed within the lodge. Dinner is served in the main dining area, privately on the beach or within your own chalet.
