Gheralta Lodge

Situated in the heart of Tigray, northernmost Ethiopia, Gheralta Lodge is a small, owner-run property that is among Ethiopia’s most sought after accommodations.

Situated in the heart of Tigray, the northernmost region of Ethiopia, Gheralta Lodge is a small, Italian owned property that is among Ethiopia’s most sought after accommodations. Though it is built on the site of a former Italian outpost, Gheralta Lodge betrays little hint of the region's colonial past, with its stone, wood, and thatch-constructed huts conforming closely to the local Tigrayan-style, and blending effortlessly with the wild, rural setting. This is a remote mountain lodge, removed from the main Historic Route, and one of only a few properties providing good access to the rock-hewn churches of Tigray, less famous but no less fascinating than those of Lalibela.

Gheralta’s owners, Enrica and Silvio Rizzotti, present the Lodge as a family-style resort – but with impeccable standards of finishing, maintenance and cleanliness – and an emphasis on good, simple cooking prepared with local products, as well as warm, comfortable accommodation. Simple and unpretentious, Gheralta Lodge’s stunning location and excellent facilities make it one of the most sought after properties in Ethiopia. Book in advance.

Accommodation

Gheralta Lodge comprises fifteen huts of varying sizes, each spotlessly clean and featuring comfortable beds, Italian furnishings, mains electricity, and marble-clad bathrooms with abundant hot water. The larger rooms can be converted intro triples, suitable for families.

The large main building of Gheralta Lodge houses a small lounge, library, and Italian-style restaurant.

Dining

The restaurant at Gheralta Lodge is lovely, and serves simple but delicious Italian food utilising ingredients grown locally.

The bar is well-stocked with Italian wines.
